Can You Use Gps On Cruise Ship Greek Cruise Ship Sinks After Stricking Mapped Reef. To Maritime Experts: How Such An Accident Happen?

Greek cruise ship sinks after stricking mapped reef. To maritime experts: How such an accident happen? - can you use gps on cruise ship

6/4/07 on a Greek cruise ship carrying out over 1,150 passengers and 400 crew members sank after hitting a reef near the island of Santorini. Reef is located on maps, GPS, etc. are missing two French.

The accident occurred in daylight and in good time. The boat was well maintained and equipped with all modern navigation equipment. There is no evidence that to date there was any damage or mechanical failure of electronic equipment.

Today we hear that the ship ran aground, the severe mechanical damage, usually in weather conditions, wind strength.

My question to the common people and experts in maritime accidents, as "stupid really happened?

Unfotunately the answer is probably a combination of poor seamanship and weather.

The entrance to the port of Santorini is a narrow channel, surrounded by volcanic reefs. The reefs are so marked on the maps of the region, as well as providing buoys and other markers around the harbor is a challenge.

In addition, there are reports that it was very windy too. It is possible that the operating system (ie, not necessarily the captain can steer the ship) could not be compensated for the effect of wind and found on the reef.

It also shows that this is not the first time in this boat problems around Santorini, the ship had apparently also eliminated the fund last week also.

These incidents do not often - but they do occur, not just passenger vessels. However, especially when there is no loss of life of these incidents is not necessarily the attention of the press ...

Mab ... a good response. Is a very experienced cruiser and a very experienced sailor, my guess is that the ship was caught in a crosswind and somehow was not able to meet her. It seems in the pictures that the ship was very close to the cliff in the vicinity and it may have a sharp edge or other rocks. When the pilot tried to stop subjects, it is conceivable that these rocks a hole that would have taken through the water.

The other post is correct. The winds in the crater are strong and can easily gusting 30kts. If this were the case, it would be really bad seamanship. I am sure that we know more soon.

How do you deal with a team is another matter. I've been on cruises of 25 + and there is a big difference (as I see it) with the severity of the crew and the line does not seem to manage security. When he exercises the lifeboats Cunard (QE2) and the Carnival of the team was in another world, and seemed to care less. Other lines, which I very seriously. In ensuring that everything is possible for the management of the ship and shipping company in context.

Stranded In fact, on monthly cruises.

There are many reasons to make the GPS is no noise when the other factors, such as not in the stream A. The time seemed very calm, moderate winds, so he suspects that their speed was slow, and perhaps lacked the ability, quick fixes . make

I have seen nothing about sailing so special maritime areas in the harbor. This is not a simple interface as "deep" water, electricity could be substantial and
as the "Sea Diamond" AKA "Birka Princess" by Finland
as jet propulsion and another tip, what has happened.

Cruisecritic.com are usually marine, but as a layer of Greek, so do not expect much.

If the blow was harder than it be a disaster if the fuel is good and the areas of technology, the loss of lives could have been total.

The available was so extraordinary that the line is busy, and had so manyTo provide boats for the rescue. If it is your typical Caribbean port, which would again have been much worse. It was an event of Costa Maya a few weeks ago when a large ship came to her hull above the waterline after hitting a quay or so.

Human error is, what he had done with the aid flowing. The captain said yes. Santorini is a seaside resort on the island, and I thank you for the local and the Greek government collects all (except two who are on the deck are 2 in the cabin near the impact). However, a person who is responsible for 1 The accident and 2 Time in the report the accident to the authorities.

Good question! Better yet, why not the alarm system is activated, so that people know that there is an emergency? Obviously someone was not doing his job, which is probably why the captain has been charged. This should never have happened, and heads roll.

As a frequent cruiser, I am appalled

The latest news, the captain decided to sail the boat near the small island with the boiler, so that tourists can take better pictures of the volcano and the cliff. That's how the accident occurred. I think he meant well, but born and will be forgotten or underestimated the reefs.

They do not end in tragedy, but the captain then tried, the boat (the reef maneuver to escape). Keel Sorry, causing structural damage to the ship.
